At the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the arrival of the Franciscans to Novo mesto, the people give them gratitude

Spring is here, when nature awakens everywhere and calls for creativity. It invites us to think that this year we should do something nice and good for our beloved town of Novo mesto. If we are somewhat romantic at the beginning of the spring and look back far into the formation of the morphology of the Earth, we can find the unique love of our beautiful green Krka River for Dolenjska, where Novo mesto was formed. As if with its bends, embraces, and seven hills, it would suggest and order: People, settle down here, here are good vibrations, a noble atmosphere, and a friendly future.

We can say that love has been present in Novo mesto for a very long time. Love in the broadest sense of commitment, unselfish giving and creativity. Here, in the known history, people lived more than two thousand years ago. This was a cultural environment, as excavations show us. The amount of love built into various products and skill with which they manufactured them is visible in the situlas. They made beautiful bracelets, necklaces and other wonderful jewellery items for their women, as well as other products for their own use and exchange.

The people of Novo mesto built their city, walls, bridges, famous houses, churches, monasteries, schools, cultural homes, libraries, workshops, factories, with great enthusiasm. For us, the people of Novo mesto, this is one of the most beautiful towns in the world!

We must not forget our Julija Primic Scheuchenstuhl, who lived in Novo mesto and is buried in the Novo mesto – Šmihel cemetery. Prešeren’s Poetry , associated with her, are the most beautiful love poems written in our language.

Many artists, scientists, other thinkers and artisans of the time lived and worked with love in Novo mesto since its founding in 1365. Many outstanding economists lived and still live in Novo mesto. With their zeal and global, strategic thinking, they have created production capacities and implemented the conditions that provide good opportunities for our youth, too.

Last but not least, the Growing Book was born here, which in its own way illustrates the all-round love for its people and development. With the United Growing Books of the World, it also points to the need for coexistence and active interaction among nations.

A time of development and immense spiritual splendour began for Novo mesto when the Franciscan monks came to us about 550 years ago. With their knowledge and work, they laid the foundations of Novo mesto in all areas, especially in the dissemination of knowledge and education for the people of Novo mesto and the surrounding area. With the construction of the monastery, the library, several types of schools, and a gymnasium, they were the pioneers of the development of the constantly growing Novo mesto.

In particular, we have to emphasize that our Franciscans were a major contributor to the common requests and demands of our creative, patriotic, and stubborn ancestors in Novo mesto, addressed to the Empress Maria Theresa to have a gymnasium built in there. On August 8, 1746, she founded the Novo mesto Gymnasium – the first public gymnasium in the Habsburg monarchy. Years later, gymnasiums were founded in Vienna and other cities of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire, too.

As an educational and cultural institution, “our” gymnasium has had an extremely important role in the cultural, scientific, economic, and political life of Slovenes since its founding in 1365. Many of our scientists, artists, and economists studied at our school, for example, Josip Plemelj, Ivan Tavčar, Oton Župančič, Slavko Grum, Božidar Jakac, Miran Jarc, Dragotin Kette, Marjan Kozina, Anton Podbevšek, Vladimir Lamut, Pino Mlakar, Marjan Mušič, Leon Štukelj, Boris Andrijanič, and many others.

To the Novo mesto citizens and all the surrounding inhabitants of the time, the Franciscans represented practically everything: they were teachers, doctors, pharmacists, advisers for small business and craft sectors, as well as farming. Soon after the foundation of the gymnasium, the economic and social growth in Novo mesto was restored and even significantly increased. Students from DolenjskaBela krajina, and other Slovene regions, but also from Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and other regions, came to Novo mesto. In the gymnasium, teachers first taught in Latin, then in German, and finally, in Slovene. That was the time of the rise and progress of Novo mesto and Dolenjska. We owe our thanks to the Novo mesto Franciscans for everything they have done for the benefit of our town.

In order to concretize our appreciation, we at the Novo mesto’s Committee for the Cultural Heritage, in consultation with many people of Novo mesto, and in cooperation with the relevant authorities, plan to erect a statue of a Franciscan with a Growing Book in September 2019. The statue will be erected on the Franciscan Square, in front of the Franciscan church. The statue will enrich the Franciscan Square, propagate the beauty of the new Main Square and enrich the spectrum of the sights of Novo mesto.

Ob 550. obletnici prihoda Frančiškanov v Novo mesto jim Novomeščanke in Novomeščani izražamo zahvalo

Ljubezen v najširšem smislu predanosti, nesebičnem dajanju in ustvarjanju. Ljudje so tu, v nam znani zgodovini, živeli že pred več kot dvema tisočletjema. In živeli so kultivirano, saj nam tako kažejo izkopanine. S kakšno ljubeznijo so izdelovali razne izdelke in kako umetelno so jih umetniško obdelovali kažejo njihove in naše situle!

In s kašno zagnanostjo so Novomeščani  gradili svoje mesto, obzidja, mostove, znamenite hiše, cerkve, samostane, šole, kulturne domove, knjižnice, delavnice, tovarne.

V Novem mestu so živeli in še živijo izjemni gospodarstveniki.

S svojim znanjem in delovanjem so postavljali temelje Novega mesta. Prav na vseh področjih, zlasti še na širjenju znanja in izobraževanja Novomeščanov in okoliških prebivalcev. Z izgradnjo samostana, knjižnice, več vrst šol in gimnazije so bili pionirji razvoja nenehno rastočega Novega mesta.

Na primer,  Josip Plemelj, Ivan Tavčar, Oton Župančič, Slavko Grum, Božidar Jakac, Miran Jarc, Dragotin Kette, Marjan Kozina, Anton Podbevšek, Vladimir Lamut, Pino Mlakar, Marjan Mušič, Leon Štukelj, Boris Andrijanič in še mnogi drugi!

Takrat so bili časi vzpona in napredka našega Novega mesta in naše Dolenjske.
